Akshaya Tritiya is an Indian festival based on mythological beliefs. Most people know Akshaya Tritiya as Akha Teej or Akshay Teej because the same name of Akshaya Tritiya is in vogue but its pure Hindi name is Akshaya Tritiya. The festival of Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated on Tritiya of Shukla Paksha of Indian month Vaishakh.

As much as the recognition of Akshaya Tritiya is for Hindus, it is equally valid for the people of the Jain community. The day of Akshaya Tritiya is a day to do religion, donating on this day is considered auspicious. According to mythological belief, the amount we donate on this day increases manifold and we get it back. Many wealthy families of India consider the day of Akshaya Tritiya important and donate on this day without any hesitation.

Although there is some recognition of Akshaya Tritiya in some countries connected with India such as Pakistan and Nepal etc., it is mainly celebrated in India only. In some states, this festival is celebrated in a special way and this festival is called the festival of girls.

The recognition of this festival is highest in India in Rajasthan. Apart from this, this festival is also celebrated with pomp in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. This festival is celebrated for more than 12 days in a city called Bundelkhand which falls in Uttar Pradesh.

Importance of Akshaya Tritiya

Like every festival, Akshaya Tritiya also has its own importance. There is a belief about Akshaya Tritiya that on this day all sins are destroyed by bathing in the Ganges and worshipping God. This festival is believed to be associated with Goddess Lakshmi. It is believed in Indian texts that by worshipping Lakshmi on the day of Akshaya Tritiya and donating seeds hesitatingly, Lakshmi Ji becomes happy and then we get fruits manifold. Like other festivals, many beliefs are prevalent regarding Akshaya Tritiya.

In some areas of the country, Gudde Guddi’s marriage is done on this day and the entire work of this marriage is done by the children. In some states, the whole village is included in it. The purpose of this belief is to make children aware of social customs and traditions. According to Indian beliefs, the auspicious time for marriage etc. starts from the day of Akshaya Tritiya. For farmers too, this festival has a different significance. In some provinces of the country, farmers see auspicious dates for their upcoming production on Akshaya Tritiya and wish for a good harvest.

There is also a belief in the tradition of Lord Vishnu on this day. It is also popular about Akshaya Tritiya that the things that are donated on this day are received by us in the next generation or in heaven. It is considered very auspicious to take blessings from your elders and ideal people on the day of Akshaya Tritiya. According to Indian mythological texts, Akshaya Tritiya is the same day from which Tretayug started from Satyug. The birth of incarnations of Lord Vishnu such as Parashurama, Nar-Narayan and Hayagriva is also considered on this date.

There is a lot of recognition of this festival in Jainism too. On this day the first Tirthankar ‘ Lord Rishabhdev ‘, who founded Jainism, was made Parana with sugarcane juice after a year of penance. Lord Rishabhdev, the first Tirthankara of Jainism, has been given special importance in Vedic and Buddhist texts as well. According to Jain texts, Rishabhdev was the first person to attain knowledge. Despite being a king, he renounced all worldly pleasures and accepted Jainism.

Why is Akshaya Tritiya celebrated?

There are many old stories about Akshaya Tritiya. If we talk about Hinduism, then the most popular story of Akshaya Tritiya is that of a Vaishya named Dharmadas. Despite being a Vaishya, Dharmadas believed in Hinduism and had great reverence for the gods and Brahmins.

To rectify his karma, this Vaish took a bath in the Ganges one day and after worshipping ritually, donated himself and everything. After this Vaishya became a great king in the next birth. It is also said that this king was also born as the next Chandragupta. Due to this effect, Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated in Hinduism.

Apart from this, it is also said that on this day the destroyer Brahmin avatar of Lord Vishnu i.e. Lord Parashuram was born. Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated in many states as Parshuram Jayanti and fairs and festivals are organized.

Talking about Jainism, Rishabhdev, the first Tirthankar of Jainism, had done Parana on this day after fasting for a year. He was unable to do Parana because no one had any knowledge of what a Jain monk is supposed to be. Due to the knowledge of caste, a king came to know about this and he got the Lord to survive by serving sugarcane juice on the day of Akshaya Tritiya. For this reason, Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated in Jainism.

What should be done on the day of Akshaya Tritiya?

In today’s modern culture, people often do not remember what to do on the day of any festival and what are its rituals. If you want to celebrate Akshaya Tritiya in general, then on this day donate something to some poor people or Brahmins with a pure heart.

If we talk about the method of worship of Akshaya Tritiya, then you should worship Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi by bathing in Gangaji on this day and offering Akshat (holy means pure rice) to them. If possible, white lotus flowers and white roses should be offered with sandalwood and incense sticks. If you want, you can also offer wheat, barley and gram dal.

After worshipping Brahmins or poor and needy people, take care of food and drink and useful things. Avoid donating material that they can misuse.

When is Akshaya Tritiya celebrated?

Akshaya Tritiya or Akha Teej is celebrated on the third day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh.
