Story of Bhai Dooj

Yamuna and Yamraj were brothers and sisters. He was born from the womb of Chhaya, wife of Lord Soiri Narayan. Yamuna used to love Yamraj very much. Yamuna repeatedly invites Yamraj to have food at her house, but Yamraj used to postpone the talk of Yamuna every time due to his busy work.

On the second day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, Yamuna commits Yamraj to take food in her house. Yamraj also thinks that I am going to lose my life, no one wants to invite me to their house, but how much my sister loves me, who is inviting me to her house for food with such goodwill.

On the day of the date, Yamraj goes out to the house of sister Yamuna to have food and free all the living beings of hell. On reaching Yamraj’s house, seeing Yamraj in her doorway, Yamuna’s happiness knows no bounds and she first bathes and feeds Yamraj with tilak.

This date became popular as Yama Dwitiya and on this date, the Bhai Dooj festival is celebrated every year. It is believed that the brother who eats food at his sister’s place on this date, gets happiness, property and wealth as well as fulfils all his wishes.
